The excitement, thrill, and rewards of underwater evidence recovery can be one of the most rewarding aspects of public safety diving. In these situations the public safety diver has been called upon by law enforcement to locate, recover and preserve evidence from a crime. Therefore our recreational search and recovery techniques have to be modified to protect any evidence that may exist on or around the item that is recovered. We also must document all aspects of the recovery and preservation including the chain of custody. Remember this evidence will probably end up in a courtroom and anything that was done incorrectly or not documented can result in a criminal going free.
If you want the opportunity to be a valuable assest to law enforcement and our criminal justice system, then learn the professional way to collect and preserve evidence that has been "disposed" of in the water. Most criminals believe that once something has been tossed in the water it is gone forever. Not true when a professional Underwater Evidence Recovery Diver is on the job. Be that diver!
Knowing you can be an integral part in the process of investigating and prosecuting a criminal.
